Democracy is a universal popular value: like PEACE.

Discorso di Enrico Berlinguer in occasione del 60° anniversario della Rivoluzione d’Ottobre.

"Il Partito comunista italiano è sorto anche esso sotto l’impulso della rivoluzione dei Soviet. Esso è poi cresciuto soprattutto perché è riuscito a fare della classe operaia, prima e durante la Resistenza, la protagonista della lotta per la riconquista delle libertà contro la tirannide fascista e, nel corso degli ultimi 30 anni, per la salvaguardia e lo sviluppo più ampio della democrazia.

L’esperienza compiuta ci ha portato alla conclusione, così come è avvenuto per altri partiti comunisti dell’Europa capitalistica, che la democrazia è oggi non soltanto il terreno sul quale l’avversario di classe è costretto a retrocedere, ma è anche il valore storicamente universale sul quale fondare un’originale società socialista.

Ecco perché la nostra lotta unitaria – che cerca costantemente l’intesa con altre forze di ispirazione socialista e cristiana in Italia e in Europa occidentale – è rivolta a realizzare una società nuova, socialista che garantisca tutte le libertà personali e collettive, civili e religiose, il carattere non ideologico dello stato, la possibilità dell’esistenza di diversi partiti, il pluralismo nella vita sociale, culturale e ideale.

Compagni, grandi sono i compiti a cui siete chiamati dagli stessi alti traguardi raggiunti nello sviluppo del vostro paese, e alta è la funzione che vi assegna la delicata fase internazionale nella lotta per la pace, per la distensione, per la cooperazione fra tutti i popoli.

Molto cammino dobbiamo ancora percorrere tutti. Noi comunisti italiani siamo certi tuttavia che, sviluppando secondo i compiti e i modi che a ciascuno sono propri i risultati della Rivoluzione d’ottobre, i partiti comunisti e operai, i movimenti di liberazione, le forze progressiste di ogni paese riusciranno a determinare – nel conseguente universalizzarsi della democrazia, della libertà e dell’emancipazione del lavoro – il superamento su scala mondiale del vecchio assetto capitalistico e, quindi, ad assicurare un futuro più sereno e felice per tutti i popoli."

Comrades, great are the tasks to which you are called by the same high goals achieved in the development of your country, and high is the role that the delicate international phase assigns to you in the struggle for peace, for detente, for cooperation among all peoples. .

We all still have a long way to go. We Italian Communists are certain, however, that, by developing the results of the October Revolution according to the tasks and ways that each person have, the communist and workers' parties, the liberation movements, the progressive forces of each country will be able to determine - in the consequent universalization of democracy, freedom and the emancipation of work - the overcoming on a world scale of the old capitalist order and, therefore, to ensure a more peaceful and happy future for all peoples. "
